What ends do you rep?
I’m born and raised in Nottingham, NG7. I’ve just moved back from living in London, Hackney E8, for the past 4 years. London is weird during these pandemic times, definitely not worth the rent at the moment.
What was the last event you went to pre-lockdown?
Well I played at a house party (hosted by Sons of Craft) in Peckham in March, the weekend before everything lockdown – 13th March. Feel so grateful I had the opportunity to play to some human beings before the madness but I do remember feeling like this will be the last time I will get to play in a long time. There was a weird energy in the air. But the last event I remember attending was Secretsundaze at The Cause (6th March). A friend’s crew, Rimbombo were hosting room 3 – the party was sick to be honest, the place was rammed. Feels mad to think how busy it was now. The Secretsundaze guys are super consistent with their parties – usually decent crowd and music always the shit I want to dance to.
1 record shop recommendation?
Rob’s Records (Nottingham). Rob’s has been a staple for the Nottingham vinyl scene. All second hand, no real order, piles and piles of records of all kinds to the level where it becomes almost unsafe. Last time I went I came out with 20 records for £17 – mad. I found a bunch of downtempo 90s UK soul, each record 50p. This place is the perfect diggin’ spot as long as you have patience and not claustrophobic. Each trip to this record shop I boost my collection with all kinds of gems and never spend much.
1 clothing brand you got love for.
Heresy. This brand has created an aesthetic based around British folklore so some cool research has gone into the look. Each season they produce shit that I love and would wear and is also conscious of sustainability and ethics.
Who did you vote for in the last elections?
Labour. Jeremy Corbyn’s manifesto was amazing. It made so much sense to me. He was 1 person in politics I could happily hand over my taxes to. My personal views lean way more over to the left but in current politics I have no real representation so my vote would have to go to labour in order to move in a progressive direction. My whole adult life has been shafted by right-wing tory cunts – a vote for labour seems to be the only weapon against them.
What are you working on at the moment?
Well since the first lockdown I have been producing a lot more. It is something that I have dipped in and out of but recently I have the head space and time to focus and create. I found the Novation Bass Station 2 in a music shop in hackney for half the price it normally goes for so this has propa helped me explore one of my favourite things in life – the bassline. Hopefully this year I will be able to release some stuff maybe even an album, who knows. Oh and also finally releasing Aquafaba Records!!!
Describe your mix.
House music. It is such a broad term nowadays but that’s all I can call it. This music is soulful and music I want to dance to. Dancing is a key element to my life and being away from the dancefloor is killing me. I reckon other people are feeling the same so hopefully this mix will stimulate some movement. These are tracks that I have played over and over in the past, to myself and to people around me – I have some emotional/sentimental attachments to some of them. I’m not someone that focuses on lyrics but these tunes have some lyrical power and importance to them.
1 music venue/club you have love for.
Soup Kitchen (Manchester) is a place I rate highly. I tend to prefer smaller, more intimate venues – Soup is the perfect size and has an amazing sound system. It has a relaxed atmosphere that I think a lot of Manchester venues achieve well, in comparison to spots in London. They have a bar upstairs serving food and always have sick DJs playing in there too. I attended plenty of live gigs and DJ sets in Soup when I was in Manchester, it was somewhere that you could always count on when you needed a dance. I think it may have has a re-branding recently, hopefully its not turned shit.
1 artist you want to hype.
This may seem bias as he’s my bro but I’m going to have to shout out Juga-Naut – one of the best Hip-hop artists in the UK. He is an artist who has retained control over his art and does everything himself. He has released over 10 albums in 10 years and kept a consistency with the quality he produces. Anyone who is into hip-hop in any kind of way needs to check him out, even if your not u should, trust me.
1 park/nature reserve you spend time in.
Over my spring/summers in London I spent a lot of time in Lea Valley/Hackney Marshes. Living in a big city its very necessary to escape the concrete and this place took me out of London. Its huge – has a swimmable river and canals and I had foraged a few different types of mushrooms and veg from that area. It’s surprising how diverse the wildlife is out there.
If you could change 1 thing about the music industry, what would that be?
How male-centric it is. I have always found it so crazy how patriarchal the whole industry is – women love music the same as men. I have found dancefloors to be propa sausage fests dominated by straight white men and this doesn’t create the best atmosphere. Balance is the key to life and this imbalance causes a culture to be saturated with a sound that is built to please one kind of person. A DJ booth and dancefloor that lacks feminine qualities struggles to creates an environment I want to be in.
